What should I do if I am injured on the job?
The first thing you should do is report your injury to your employer. If your loved one has been hurt, contact us so we can get involved as soon as possible. The second thing to do is to seek medical care for your injury or illness. You are permitted to see the doctor of your choice. If your employer sends you to a doctor, be aware that the doctor may have your employer's or an insurance company's interests in mind, not yours. A company doctor may send you back to work too soon, in which case you risk more serious injury.
How do I know if my injury is covered?
If you can prove that your injury or illness is a direct result of your working environment, you may be eligible for workers' compensation benefits. Any pre-existing condition or injury may not be covered, but if your illness or injury is aggravated by your workplace or the work itself, you may be eligible. Contact Matthews & Associates to learn for certain if you can collect.
What is a Workers' Compensation Health Care Network and how do I know if I belong to one?
A Workers' Compensation Health Care Network (network) is a group of health care providers that offers medical coverage to injured workers covered by workers' comp insurance. Certain employers elect to belong to networks, but not all employers belong to networks. If you are in the network, obtain a copy of Texas Department of Insurance's official rules from your employer. You must follow these rules. If you have questions, contact the firm.
What kind of benefits will I actually receive?
If you qualify for workers' compensation, you can expect both medical and monetary benefits. These depend on your work-related injury or illness. The benefits can include lost wages, medical expenses, physical therapy, job retraining, and compensation for future physical or mental recovery.
For more specific information on the benefits to which you may be entitled, visit the Texas Workers' Compensation website, under the Texas Department of Insurance.
How long will my workers' comp benefits last?
Texas law entitles eligible employees to receive workers' compensation benefits until they have reached maximum medical improvement (MMI). Your authorized doctor establishes MMI; this is when you have fully recovered from your injury, your treatment has plateaued, or the statutory benefit period is over. If MMI results in diminished working or earning capacity, you may be able to receive lifetime or supplemental benefits.
